GLOBAL NEUROSURGERY ROTATIONS AND FELLOWSHIPS IN MALAWI
Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) has the only comprehensive Neurosurgical Unit in Malawi with a population of 18 million people. The Unit became fully operational in 2014 and was established through collaboration between Oslo University Hospital in Norway and the Ministry of Health in Malawi. As of April 2017, the College of Surgeons for East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Council has recognized and approved the Neurosurgical Unit at QECH as a training site for neurosurgery under the COSECSA Neurosurgery Fellowship. On 2 nd January 2018, the Unit welcomed the first two trainees in neurosurgery.
Opportunities still exist for short 3-6 month fellowships in Global Neurosurgery at QECH in Malawi. Experience to be gained includes flexible neuroendoscopy, myelomeningocele surgery, infections, large late presenting tumors, and other tropical conditions rarely found in the developed countries. Our service combines both paediatric and adult neurosurgery. Fellows can be accompanied by their home Faculty or they will be supervised by local Faculty in Malawi.
Opportunities also exist for visiting neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists and any other neuroscience specialists to support our new training programme.
